Your cover letter and resume
We recommend that you include a cover letter with your resume.  A cover letter is used to respond to a particular job posting, and will contain highlights from your resume.  A cover letter gives a future employer some insight into ‘who you are’, and should only be a few paragraphs and no longer than one page.  Click Here for a Sample.

Resumes or CV’s can vary depending on where you’re from.  A resume should include your name, contact information, objective (the specific job or type of job you are applying for), and outline of your skills and qualifications, your work history, education, and personal interests and or hobbies. You do not have to include your date of birth or photo. Click here for a sample.

References
Employers will often ask for two or more references.  Make sure you have a current contact list of your referees and be prepared to hand it in with your application.

The Interview
Show up a little early and make a good first impression. Smile, offer a firm handshake, and be professional and keen. Throughout the interview, the employer will be looking for honesty and a good attitude. If you’re not from Canada, have a copy of your work visa and your SIN number handy.

Your Rights
If you think you’ve been treated unfairly at work, the government’s Employment Standards branch can help you. Check http://www.labour.gov.bc.ca/esb/self-help or call 1 800 663 3316. If you feel you’ve been sexually harassed, call the BC Council of Human Rights at 1 888 440 8844.

Volunteering
This is a great way to meet people and get some work experience. Check http://www.mywcss.org/volunteer.htm for your options.
