Ian Dunn's Five Things You Need to Know About Mountain Bikers:

1. They Have Money
  • More than a third of MTB visitors have incomes over $100,000
  • Average MTB visitor spends $750 - $2,700 per trip
  • Cost of trip important BUT not the main influencer
  • MTB spending in Whistler had a total economic impact of $34 million for the resort in 2006

2. They’re Young (at heart)

  • Largest segment 30 to 39 years
  • Generation X
  • More riders over 40 than under 18
  • Seeking adventure and unique experiences

3. They Generate Room Nights

  • Almost all mountain bikers stay overnight in Whistler
  • High length of stay – 1 night more than average
  • Majority staying in paid accommodation
  • Not just Vancouver – US, UK, Europe, Australia
  • Much more likely to return to Whistler than the average visitor

4. They LOVE Mountain Biking

  • Mountain biking is the main reason why they visit Whistler
  • High-end riders – more than 2/3 prefer to ride advanced to expert trails
  • Variety of trails number one factor when choosing a MTB destination

5. They Have Unique Needs

  • Majority of participants bring their own bike – need special services for:
  • Transportation, Storage, Cleaning, Maintenance
  • Number and variety of trails key to creating a great experience. Need:
  • Maps, Signage, Tours

Take home message from Richard's presentation:

Where are we headed?

Mountain bike destination and event markets are in their infancy and growing rapidly.  There are a number of different areas around the world that recognize this and are moving fast!  We have a head start but beware of complacency – there will always be someone that is willing to work/market/promote harder.  Whistler has it all: an amazing location, #1 bike park, and world renowned event Crankworx.

What do mountain bikers want?
  • Secure locked bike storage at accommodation and outside shops

  • Place to clean and work on bike (the ultimate being a dedicated bike room with racks)

  • Laundry facilities and drying room with gear racks

  • Good food – large breakfasts, possibly bag lunch for XC folks

  • Maps, guide books and local info, bike and event specials in shops

  • Basic bike repair items

What can you do?

  • Most mountain bikers are tech/web savvy – internet marketing will go a long way
  • Sign up for MB forums and newsletters as a way to gain some insight
  • Provide internet access in your facility
  • Provide a large trail map on the wall – and smaller trail maps to take away
  • Ability to offer transport for bikes from airport
  • Accommodation providers set up bike rentals with nearby bike facilities – make it easy for visitors
  • Work with other businesses on ideas to offer great service and keep money local
