Take home message from Richard's presentation:
Where are we headed?
Mountain bike destination and event markets are in their infancy and growing rapidly. There are a number of different areas around the world that recognize this and are moving fast! We have a head start but beware of complacency – there will always be someone that is willing to work/market/promote harder. Whistler has it all: an amazing location, #1 bike park, and world renowned event Crankworx.
What do mountain bikers want?
-
Secure locked bike storage at accommodation and outside shops
-
Place to clean and work on bike (the ultimate being a dedicated bike room with racks)
-
Laundry facilities and drying room with gear racks
-
Good food – large breakfasts, possibly bag lunch for XC folks
-
Maps, guide books and local info, bike and event specials in shops
-
Basic bike repair items
What can you do?
-
Most mountain bikers are tech/web savvy – internet marketing will go a long way
-
Sign up for MB forums and newsletters as a way to gain some insight
-
Provide internet access in your facility
-
Provide a large trail map on the wall – and smaller trail maps to take away
-
Ability to offer transport for bikes from airport
-
Accommodation providers set up bike rentals with nearby bike facilities – make it easy for visitors
-
Work with other businesses on ideas to offer great service and keep money local
