Are you thinking about sub-letting your commercial space or taking a booking from the many groups who need to be here during the period of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (the “Games”) - January 1 to March 31, 2010?
After one year of serving groups directly associated with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), the Commercial Space Matching Program is now accessible by all organizations looking for space in Whistler during the 2010 Winter Games.
The Commercial Space Matching Program, a partnership between the Whistler Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Whistler, is a service that matches those parties looking to rent commercial space during the Games, with those parties who have commercial space available to rent. During its first year, the Program has been accessible only to groups directly associated with VANOC, such as National Olympic Committees, International Sport Federations, sponsors and partners. As of November 2008, all organizations looking to rent during Games time are able to access the list of available spaces through whistler.com.
The decision to open the Program to the public has been made in response to the increasing number of inquiries from out-of-town groups with a strong interest in securing an extended presence in Whistler during the 2010 Winter Games.
The service is free of charge. To participate, you simply need to enter your contact details and space specifications in the online registration form. Please note that this is an information and matching service only. Neither of the parties above (the Whistler Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Whistler or VANOC) will participate in any negotiations between you and interested organizations. Please note: If you are contacted by agents offering help in the process, it is your responsibility to negotiate potential fees.

We encourage you to plan ahead and have a strategy for the Games!
By offering this service, the Whistler Chamber is not intending to encourage local businesses to vacate their space. In fact, our hope is that most businesses will remain open to offer our guests an authentic Whistler experience. However, for some business owners the matching service tool may be a good fit. Some may want to volunteer and enjoy the Games or may feel that their services and products will not be in demand during the Games. Either way, businesses with a solid business plan for the Games will benefit the most from this huge business opportunity.
At the Chamber’s luncheon in September 2008, a presentation was made by Tourism Whistler regarding timely considerations to maximize commercial space opportunities associated with the 2010 Winter Games. Key highlights included:
- Develop a business plan now and decide on an operational model for 2010 as soon as possible
- Fair and competitive pricing is key to individual success as well as Whistler’s long term success
- Know your pricing model before entering negotiations with potential renters
- Groups will be comparing Whistler against other possible locations within the Sea to Sky corridor, Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland when negotiating for commercial space during Games time
- Municipal laws/bylaws regarding liquor licensing and signage will apply
