Celebrate Whistler's innovators, trailblazers and community cultivators! Nominate the best of the best for the 3rd Annual Whistler Excellence Awards!

Whistler’s premier black tie business and community awards hosted by the Whistler Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Community Foundation of Whistler, the Whistler Arts Council and the Whistler Centre for Sustainability honours the businesses and individuals who have achieved success in the areas of Service, Innovation and Sustainability, and those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the Arts, Business and Community Service.  New this year, is the Whistler Chamber Rising Star Award for those under 40 on the fast track to success!

With over 200 locals together for one night, this is the celebration of the year that brings everyone from youthful innovators to longtime local legends out to recognize the very best in our community!

Have you achieved excellence? Would you like to recognize an individual or business that has achieved excellence? See the criteria below or view as a PDF


Nominations will remain open until midnight on Monday, May 9, 2014.

All applications and nominations must meet the following general and award-specific criteria:
1.    Be located in Whistler
2.    Have consented to nomination, publication of their name and be willing to summarize successes to enable knowledge transfer
3.    Must not have won the award within the past 5 years
4.    Satisfy the award-specific criteria (see below)
5.    Business should be a current WCC member

 This Whistler business person has had a major impact on the landscape of the local business community. They are an exemplary leader, and exhibit vision and passion. They have an innovative brand and they continuously give back by supporting community initiatives and projects.

An eligible candidate must:

  • Have been in operation for a minimum of five years
  • Exercise care and empathy with employees
  • Create a work environment that fosters growth and encourages development of employees
  • Be an exemplary leader and demonstrate passion, vision and positive moral character
  • Emphasize the importance of delivering high levels of customer service to all clients
  • Be a leader in their industry
  • Have leading products and/or services
  • Have a major impact on the landscape of the local business community
  • Gives back to the community by supporting local initiatives and projects

Created in 1969, the Citizen of the Year award is Whistler’s longest standing celebration. The Community Foundation of Whistler is honoured with the task of selecting the annual recipient of this prestigious award. The Whistler Citizen of the Year is an outstanding community member who contributes significant volunteer time to enhancing the quality of life in Whistler. This individual demonstrates extraordinary leadership and community service outside of employment. Well-respected in the community, they inspire others with their caring and positive attitude and spirit of cooperation.

An eligible candidate must:

  • Be an individual - couples must be submitted as two individual nominees
  • May reside outside of Whistler but must make their volunteer contributions to the Whistler Community
  • Be recognized for their volunteer contributions
  • Volunteer their time, outside of the realm of their employment, in one or more activities or with one or more community organizations
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude
  • Works respectfully with others in the spirit of cooperation
  • Be an exemplary leader who displays honesty and integrity
  • Have made a lasting impact on a variety of community members or aspects of community life
  • Continuously inspire others to give to the community

This Whistler business has shown recent innovative talent in developing a new product or service. It is creative, cutting edge, unique and out of the ordinary.

Eligible business or individuals must:

  • Have been created in Whistler
  • Have successfully implemented an innovative concept (and possibly sold the innovation or business) and can demonstrate measurable success as a result
  • Have made a considerable positive impact in their industry or on a business and this is in some way transformational
  • Have potential to address an issue or critical barrier to progress in the field
  • Be creative and cutting edge in a local, provincial, national or international context

 This Whistler business person is starting to make an impact beyond their years. They show outstanding success at a young age, give back by supporting the community, and are on a clear leadership track. They should have a culture of trail blazing and a solid plan for future career and performance development. In support of this new award, TELUS is generously donating $1000 to the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation to support the next generation of Rising Stars growing up in the Sea to Sky.

An eligible candidate must:

  • Be age 39 or under on June 19, 2014
  • Be in ownership, management or another leadership capacity within a Whistler business organization
  • Exhibit outstanding performance and definite career progress – demonstrated through measurable results
  • Be highly active in the community and committed to making a difference
  • Demonstrate a history of risk taking and trail blazing
  • Have future plans for career and performance development
  • Have been in business or role for less than five years – if someone in this age category has been in their role or business for over 5 years then we would recommend  the business person of the year award
  • Open to both current and future Whistler Chamber of Commerce members.

These Whistler business have industry-leading service delivery and have made an impact on the Whistler guest experience. They have introduced and implemented service strategies that allow them to deliver exceptional customer service and consistently exceed customers’ expectations.

An eligible business must:

  • Deliver industry leading service
  • Make an impact on the Whistler guest experience
  • Implement successful service strategies across the business ensuring customer expectations are exceeded
  • Participate in both the 2013 Summer and 204 Winter ServeUs Challenge programs
  • Achieve an overall average score of 9 or above for each ServeUs Challenge program  
  • Have 24 employees or less - for small business award 
  • Have 25 employees or more - for large business award

The Whistler Centre for Sustainability selects the annual recipient of this award. This Whistler business has implemented sustainable practices and or strategies and has made considerable positive impact in progressing success and sustainability in their business, sector and the resort community. This is evidenced through efforts to protect the local environment, enhance the resort experience, enrich community life, develop partnerships for success and ensure economic viability.

An eligible business must have:

  • Implemented practices and or strategies that support the success and sustainability of their business
  • Made a considerable positive impact in progressing the success and sustainability of their sector and the resort community
  • An understanding of what they need to do to further progress toward sustainability e.g. know what is next
  • Communicated the story and rationale of their sustainability practices/strategies to their customers

The Whistler Arts Council selects the annual recipient of this award. Since 2003, the Whistler Arts Council (WAC) has presented the Whistler Business & the Arts Award in partnership with the Whistler Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, WAC joined the Chamber in presenting the award as part of the newly created Annual Whistler Excellence Awards, Whistler’s “premier” business and community awards celebration. In 2014 the award has been renamed the Whistler Champion of the Arts & Culture Award, and broadened its eligible nominations.

Potential nominees now include:

  • A business or organization or business leader demonstrating exceptional leadership, creative vision and commitment in encouraging and developing partnerships between business and the arts.
  • An individual actively working or volunteering and who has made significant contributions to enhance arts, culture and heritage in Whistler or making significant contributions to the arts in education.
  • An individual artist who has enriched the community through his/her talents and commitment to visual, literary, media and/or performing arts or heritage. He/she excels as a creator or performer, facilitating or promoting the artistic efforts of    others and broadening community engagement in the arts.
